this is not a cat blog

But I did think Sir Louie looked particularly charming at this moment. As of today he’s been allowed to join the main household, and boy, is it a big, strange and wonderful world. But scary, sometimes, too, because of that older, bigger cat that hisses occasionally. Still, life is full of exploration and wonder. Which is tiring, and makes for good naps under the reading lamp.

We have friends from MPLS visiting this weekend..of all kinds. My friends Carrie and Ben drove through on Friday and we had coffee at The Java House, a short but fun visit. Later, Megan + Corrie arrived and are staying with us now. We’re waiting for the Irish beef stew I concocted to finish cooking. Carrots take forever to tenderize.

I’ve been transcribing more interviews, and am reading The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein, which is causing me angsty nights, as I usually read deep into the night, which maybe isn’t the best idea for my dreamscapes.

Sir Louie Egbert III

Sir Louie Egbert III

Welcome, Sir Louie, to our motley family. Sir Louie was adopted from the garden of a friend of a friend. He was the most outgoing kitten of the bunch, and has acclimated very well. Right now, he’s separated from the rest of our cats because he has a cold, and can’t get his shots yet. They all know about each other though, sniffing at the bottom of the door to Louie’s room, etc. Erin, who was skeptical of the whole kitten deal has fallen head over heals with Louie and sits with him for a couple of hours every morning before going to work. He’s really quite charming, and is a total LOVE hound.

Right now he’s curled up on Noah’s Batman blanket, listening to the rain and me typing.

I’ve been spending my extra time working on a project for a guy in San Francisco who is writing a book on the history of the Bay Area punk scene..I’m transcribing interviews, which is extremely time-consuming, but really really fun to do. Punk rock and history! What could be more up my alley, seriously?? My favorite interview so far was with a woman who lives in Berkeley who talked about how she can’t NOT wear jeans and rock t-shirts:

I went through like three years of being depressed and having shitty fashion..wearing just like anything I could find–I had no idea what to wear if I couldn’t wear rock t-shirts and all black. It was just like the most alienating horrible couple of years. And I finally just gave up. “

I can totally relate. I myself was tagged “Jeans + T-shirt Naomi” in 6th grade, and it remains true to this day, basically. Add a coffee cup, and there’s my daily attire.

mom ~1970

mom ~1970

a sketch I did from a damaged photo of my mom circa 1970..this was before I was on the scene. I can’t tell if it’s college or High School, I’m guessing it was her short-ish stint in College, but I’ll have to ask. She would have been about 18 here; she was 19 when I was born.

I promise to post something other than drawings soon! I’ve been really trying to make myself practice so it takes up a bunch of my evenings, and also the drawing is a great way to decompress, and I’ve been needing to do that a lot lately! August was a bizarre month, mostly for other people, but boy, I was right there with them.

Also I want to eventually do some auto-mytho-comics soon, but first I need to get a little better with drawing the comic versions of my parents, and myself when I was small.
